Players Course

Players Course @ Alum Creek State Park, Galena:

The newest and possibly most challenging of the MOODGolf courses, this course leads you over water, through mature trees, and down tight fairways. Complete control is the key here. Disc golfers share the quiet, peaceful surroundings of this part of Alum State Park with very few people and hear only boats, birds and the “thunk” of plastic hitting trees. Clear and clean lines are apparent, but you need to be accurate here while using a variety of shots. Left handed and side arm throwers will find an equal amount of possibilities on this course. You will need your “A” game for this one.

Gordon Holton

Gordon Holton Memorial DGC @ Delaware St. Park, Delaware: The Delaware State Park Course was a dream of Gordon Holton. His ideas, planning and building of this course was completed only a few years ago. Although he never saw it completed, it has brought many from around the state to conquer his vision.

This course will make you throw everything in your bag and every type of shot: rollers, tomahawks, flick shots, and that weird thing that only you do. The course is well maintained and each hole has at least one clear route with dual cement tees. The course is particularly scenic with many views of the Delaware Reservoir. It has a nice balance of open, partially open, and wooded holes. Don’t let the map fool you on this one. The course’s canopy will keep your disc around 10 feet off the ground on many holes. With elevation changes, tight wooded areas, and mature trees dotting fairways, this course has become a favorite of many Ohio disc golfers.

Sawyer Ludwig

Sawyer Ludwig DGC, Marion: Located in the host city of Marion. MOODGolf’s first course was originally a 9-hole open course. About 4 years ago, 9 more wooded holes were added. The front nine is open with a few strategically placed mature trees and holes that vary in distance and slight elevation. While the back nine holes aren’t long, they are technical. Dual sets of tees will be used with some divisions playing from both sets. Some fairways are tight, and the rough can be hard to recover from. Discs are pretty easy to spot, but the trees can get thick in places; finding a route back out can be difficult. Make sure your front nine goes well because the back nine could change your whole game.

Aumiller Park

Aumiller Park DGC, Bucyrus: One of two MOODGolf courses in a public park. You could bring the whole family, cook out, swim, and use the playground. There’s something for the whole family while you throw. It’s another clean course that stays clear from the rest of the park. The front nine are shorter, heavily wooded, and very technical. You’ll find yourself throwing over ravines, which adds more challenge to the already wooded and intricate shots. The elevation stops after hole 10, and the back nine opens up to the longer shots on the course. The distance of Aumiller will test your skill with many mature trees that make you think hard before you throw. The Sandusky River runs along the back nine and, at times, will get disc hungry.

Upper Sandusky Reservoir

Upper Sandusky Reservoir DGC, Upper Sandusky: Recent city modifications have made all posted maps and reviews you may have seen obsolete. The front nine will start with 3 open holes then dive into the beautiful wooded area that is both well groomed and enticing. This densely wooded course–with clean, clear paths–has been renovated to toughen it up for Worlds. Most of the retained wooded holes on the back nine are shorter. Several new holes will surprise you as long and wooded Par 4s. Pathways, the river, and staked “out of bounds” areas, add some unique challenges. It will definitely be worth all of the hard work this spring to include it in the 2010 Am Worlds mix.

Hedges-Boyer

Hedges-Boyer Park DGC, Tiffin: The other of two courses in a multi-use park with swimming, baseball, volleyball and playgrounds for the whole family. This is a very well groomed course with dual cement tees. The shorter course, from the red tees, will be used by some divisions. The course has a good mix of distances and use of elevation, with water hazards on a few holes. While this course is a little more open than other MOODGolf courses, it has the most hazards with pathways, roadways, a baseball field, a creek and parking lots that are all out of bounds. So, this course has technical challenges that will have you considering your throw twice. After you play here, you’ll walk away feeling good about your game while knowing you threw a fun course.

If you look at a map of Ohio, these six courses may look like they are miles away from each other. Well some are, but as a player, you will not have to drive from the most northern course to the most southern. The distance of courses in one day of play will be an average of a 20 minutes drive from each other.
